20 French Francs Gold Coin 900.0 – Napoléon (Coq de Chaplain)
Made by French mint, France.
The gold coins of 20 francs called “Marianne Coq” are among the best-known French coins in France and around the world. Called “Marianne” or “Coq” because of the engravings they represent, “Napoléon” is the colloquial term for a former French gold coin. The coins were minted (at various times) in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 40, 50, and 100 francs. The coin was issued during the reign of Napoleon I and features his portrait on the obverse.
The coin is made with generous amounts of precious metals and demonstrates the grandeur and richness of French history and culture and especially symbolizes their gold industry. The beautifully designed coin’s back depicts Marianne, the symbol of he French republic, as conceived by J.C. Chaplain. Marianne represents freedom and reason, just like Lady Liberty of the US Mint, or like Britannia, of the Royal Mint.
On the reverse is a golden rooster, which embodies the rich culture and history of France. The Rooster in gold, or the “Rooster Gaulois” is considered the unofficial symbol of France. Contact us for more information!
